Home Security: Watch Out for Light BulbsADT, ADT security, ADT home security, ADT security systems,

Keeping one's home safe is generally a top priority for homeowners. Any one of a number of things can occur in or around your home that one would not think twice about occurring. And, one shouldn't waste their time thinking about all of these things because there wouldn't be enough time in the day. Thankfully, there are home security systems that can do all of that thinking for you so you can focus on the more important things in your life.

One of these commonplace threats come from things that get hot when they are turned on, and keep getting hotter and hotter the longer they remain on. Yep, you guessed it, light bulbs. These seemingly harmless fixtures in everyone's home are one of the most imminent threats to our home's security because we would never think that they would cause any harm.

There are several steps you can take to protect your home from light bulbs catching your belongings on fire. First, make sure that all of the light bulbs in your home have protective, fireproof coverings over them. In doing so, in the event that a light bulb overheats and bursts, the glass and hot wiring in the center will be contained and will not be able to catch anything flammable nearby on fire. Next, make sure to dust all exposed light bulb surfaces regularly so dust doesn't build up. When dust builds up on a hot surface such as a light bulb, the accumulated dust can easily catch fire and that fire can spread to nearby furniture, paper wall coverings, and carpet. It is also imperative that every room in your home contains a working fire alarm so your home security system will be ready in the event that something does start smoking. So, for instance, if the dust on the lamp in the living room does catch fire, the smoke alarm will go off and someone will be notified in an instant. If you are in your home when this happens, you can quickly run to turn off the light and put out the flames. If you are not home, the home security alarm will go off and the authorities will be notified. Either way, hopefully preventing catastrophe.

Today, there are various different types of light bulbs that come standard in the things we buy. The most common are the candescent and incandescent standard light bulbs that are usually 60, 70 or 80 watts, energy efficient bulbs, and halogen bulbs. It is important for your home's security to note which kinds of bulbs are in and around your home. Traditionally, most homes are fitted with standard bulbs, but people are rapidly switching to energy saving bulbs. Not only are energy saving bulbs less likely to catch fire because they don't get as hot as standard bulbs, but they will last longer and will save you money on your energy bill. Halogen bulbs also don't tend to get as hot as standard candescent bulbs.

Thus, it is important to take the proper steps to ensure your home's security and make sure you have a good home security system in the event that something does go wrong.
